Clean City Update

September 23, 2019

Everyday we’re inspired by our incredibly hardworking and passionate staff, who have, despite heavy monsoon rains the past three months, carried on our work to create positive change within their community. Our Operations Manager, Sushila, and Education & Outreach Coordinator, Maila, have been educating local businesses and residents on the harmful effects of burning plastics and improper waste disposal.

Nepal currently produces an estimated 2,000 tons of solid waste (60% organic and almost 20% plastic) each day, more than 80% of which is dumped into rivers or unsanitary landfills. That is the equivalent to 50 tractor trailers every single day.

Without proper planning and investment in infrastructure, pollution is taking its toll on local residents, with an increasing number of people reporting respiratory problems and lung disease from burning trash and exhaust fumes. Groundwater contamination is a growing threat to communities throughout Nepal, where 85 percent of people living in Nepal don’t have access to clean drinking water.

Clean City is a grassroots organization that works with the local government and various stakeholders (local conservation groups, recyclers, INGOs, etc.) to implement effective and better policies in waste management to preserve Chitwan National Park and improve the livelihoods of the people in surrounding areas. Our early traction and opportunities for multiple revenue streams promises to create a self-sustaining, profitable business run by the community within three years that could be replicated across Nepal and the developing world.

Clean City is proud to be aligned with the ambitious targets set forth by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Fighting pollution, empowering women, and cultivating economic growth have been the pillars of our organization from the start, and we are committed to continuing the work that support this global movement.

We are excited to see tangible progress in Chitwan, as more than 50% of the local hotel and business owners are taking strides towards reducing, segregating, and recycling their waste using our services. Our local partner organization, Digo Fohor Bebasthapan Sahakari (Nepali for Sustainable Waste Management Cooperative), has galvanized the support of its 121 members to put pressure on the government to implement effective policies moving forward.

Thank you for your continued support for this community's initiative to achieve a sustainable waste management model in one of the most polluted countries in the world. Everything we’ve accomplished thus far is because of wonderful supporters like you.

The experience I've gained from the past four years living in Nepal highlights important, systemic challenges and ways to engage the community to come up with sustainable solutions. Thank you for supporting Clean City, and for following along on our journey. We will continue to send updates as they arise.
